Would North Korea be better off today if there had not been partition of North and South?

Did the Russian war with Afganistan make or situation better or worse than it was, and is today?

Are there lessons to be learned from these to help us find a solution with Iraq?

One lesson to learn is how to handle the Asian cultures. As western people we have a hard time understanding the people of Iraq and how important sectarian issues are to them. Victory in Viet Nam would have proved how inept we are at Asian cultures.Supporting corrupt regimes does not make us good guys. The south Vietnamese government was full of corruption and that made the people distrust it. Many of the mistakes made there are being made today in Iraq.

To try and impose our values on people who have dealt with life far longer than us is wrong. North Korea has been a failure for the communist and the Russian venture into Afghanistan taught them a lesson we need to learn. Stay out of tribal politics. Whatever happens in Iraq we did a good deed and should leave with dignity not in disgrace.

Has everyone here forgotten our history lessons? Vietnam was a conflict, not a war, and we didn't lose. We came to a cease fire agreement. I think that that North Korea would be a communist country/region regardless of our involvement since thats the regime they were trying to push on the South. I think the South is better off because of our assistance. I believe that Afghanistan is worse off now than they were when they were under Russian control. However I think its a country that is improving and growing in strength. I believe that our assistance and removal of the Taliban has greatly contributed to this growth. Afghanistan is becoming a greater nation now than it ever was before. I also think that Iraq is a separate situation. Its a new war, new motives and new tactics. I don't support the war but I think its important that we Americans remember to support the men and women who are serving our great country, ensuring our freedoms and helping others to receive those same freedoms. We don't have to support the man making the decisions but we definitely need to support those making such huge sacrifices.

Question 1. A united Korea today would be part of the republic of China.

Question 2. This war made the situation worsen for the US. We trained and supplied Al Qeada!! We supplied and support Iraq with their war with Iran. Our lamed duck policies caused all this chaos in the middle east.

Question 3. There will be no lessons learned from this because our administration is out of control. The only solution is to find an alternative for oil. Also, we must prosecute the administration for using the war to benefit there special interest groups and stop spreading democracy to nations who do not relish it.

The only solution in Iraq is admit defeat (like in Vietnam), pull out our military and let the Iraqi people resolve their differences. No more American lives need be lost for a Civil War that is imminent.

I do not know about Vietnam.

I think Cambodia would have been better off if the US had won the Vietnam war. 1/3 of the Cambodians were killed and the US did nothing. Because of anti-war sentiment after Vietnam.

I think we are in a very situation today. Very different enemy. The similarities lie in the blood shed that will surely occur in Iraq if the US leaves.

And that doesn't count the blood-shed in the US if the terrorists claim the victory. The US will become targets of terrorism.

Remember, Vietnam was about getting rid of the French imperialists. The Vietnamese weren't strictly enemies of the US. The Vietnamese weren't strictly trying to destroy the US.

Had the U.S. had a better strategy with Vietnam, and had been able to achieve success in bringing democracy to Vietnam, I have no doubt they would be better off today. I'm also certain the conditions of North Korea would be better off had the country not been divided (see the example of E. and W. Germany). As far as how it could help in Iraq...it's likely too late for that. We needed a better strategy and more world support to do it efficiently. Now, you got me. Do we leave and let it be a terrorist state? Do we stick it out and try to garner more support? Tough.

For North and South Korea, there would be the same problems.

The USSR-Afghani war made things worse

We are not learning anything to help in Iraq, which is why we are making the same mistakes
