Ok say I'm a lotr geek but here is the right answer as John Ronald Reuel (never wondered what JRR stood for) himself would have argued...
We can eliminate the dwarves. The smallest, obviously, and least significant of the peoples, created as a copy of the original sentient beings - the elves.
So elves or men? Depends what period we are discussing. The elves are the first created sentient beings, brought to life by Manwe in the first age. Tolkien clearly states in the Silmarillion that they are stronger, cleverer and more powerful than men - both physically and spritually.
However, between the first age and the third age (the period in which in LOTR takes place) elves diminish and men rise in power.
So the answer is First and Second Age Elves kick ***. Third and Fourth Age (the age we are living in) Men take the win.
PS I can't believe Yahoo will star out *** - what if we wanted to discuss alternative names for Donkeys!!

Definitely Men. All through the Lord of the Rings Tolkien writes how the Elves diminish while Men increase. The Elves are, sadly, a dying people.
If there were an equal number of Elves and Men, or if the Elves came over from Valinor, they would win out over Men and Dwarves, given their superior stealth, senses, and accuracy with the bow. On an open plain they might have a harder time, but I would still bet the farm on the Elves.

I find this a rather strange question, considering the nature of Lord of the Rings. The central theme of the book was the fellowship of the ring, where wizards, men, elves, hobbits, eagles and a dwarf were united together in their battle against Darkness, and recognised each other as fellows in the service of Light.
The Lord of the Rings is one of the signposts, pointing the way forward in these dark times, a book to be revered and treasured. It seems to be missing the whole point of the book to divide these races in proposing a competitive juxtaposition with each other.

If your talking one on one the elves will win every time.
On a battle field it depends on the age as numbers greatly sway battles
