i want to paint the outside of my clawfoot but not sure if theres a special paint i should use.

yes it is called 2-part epoxy enamel....you can buy a kit from most home stores for about 20-30 dollars

a nice way to paint a clawfoot bathtub on the outside is with a bronze paint

I've done this b4 4 some of my Victorians, and cleaning with TSP, letting dry thoroughly, painting with an undercoat primer and then your top coat and color.
Usually the job turns out real nice. The back is a rough surface, but your top coat will determine the gloss and smoothness of the process.

Make sure it's clean then use metal primer , then an oil based iundercoat and finish with gloss paint
