i have pop up blockers, i have the McAfee pakage but i still get ads even when i'm not online. i'm afraid if i buy something it won't fix the problem. anything i can download that is safe and free?

http://www.ewido.net You will be redirected to "AVG", as they are the new owners of ewido. The program becomes free if you don't purchase in 30 days. They just remove the auto updates.
http://www.emsisoft.com A2Squared Malware V2 They will ask u for your email address so they can send you a free key. Be sure and download the free home for personal use version.
Spybot Search & Destroy the owner is a personal friend. An his program is free, but junk in my opinion.

I 2d that! AVG free is an impressive Anti Virus software. Spybot S&D and ad-conscious can assist %. up the different nasties yet when your using AVG free you would not have any complications. also get a firewall from Zone Alarm

op ups can be a result of a site you visit, not necesary spyware or anything.
a good choice is adaware se personal its free

go to www.download.com get Spybot search and Destroy AND get Ad-Aware, install, get updates, and run both (one at a time). That should get rid of anything you have as far as spy ware goes.

best thing is you go for winxp sp2 and keep the firewall on
you wouldnt any spyware
i dont use any
i have no problems and no unwanted clutter either.
