if you want adventure then you will have to venture beyong the hotel enclaves. traveling throughout jamaica is not for the faint at heart, especially when you hear all the alarming stuff that takes place no where else in the world. If you know someone there who can help you around and can let youy see the sights. it will also be a much more rewarding experience. If you want to experience Jamaica you have to leave the resorts. if you want to experience a resort you can go anywhere for that; dont even have to leave your home country. so for beaches. jamaicais surrounded by beaches. It depends on what is it that you are looking for. rest and relaxaion/ seclusion- port land, st. thomas and a little island off mainland jamaica called lime cay. popular beaches- negril, oco rios, montego bay, but you will have plenty of company. For ultra seclusion- St elizabeth ans west moreland. You are less likely to be heckled beyond the main resort towns. if you have friends you can go hiking and descover your own swimming holes, most beaches in jamaica are public domains so you will not be prosecuted for trespassing. there are many waterfalls that are inland, which you will enjoy much more than dunns river falls, i do i like seclusion. from a true jamaican. if you need more assistance feel free to add me to your list and i will advice you. As in any country, use street smarts, I am currently in the Usa and I dont just go into a community. Do your research, unless you are with a native or in a group.

Jamaica has two cities, and one Municipality, the capital which whould be(if you are sending letters to kingston,it should be Kingston, Kingston as Kingston is the smallest parish in JAMAICA,22 KM) Kingston, located on the southeast coast,(and St Andrew co-opperate Area, which streches from the water front of the harbour, to the hills in St Andrew),population,Aprox, 800,000 and more and that was an early 2000 census.

Second city is Montego Bay or the tourist capital as it is known to tourist who go there.Montego Bay has a population close to over 260,000 should be more by now, close to 300,000.

Portmore on the other hand is a Municipality not! a city,in early 2000,s there was a debate whether or not to make that town a city base on it size and economic potential, and educational and many other facter.
In the end it was found wanting, and so the authorities declared it a Municipality, not a city.there are other town centers which are only classified as town areas.
