Most in the West do not regard the establishment of a Palestinian state and the Israel as mutually exclusive. Provided that both sides recognize the territory of the other, both can live in peace. Perhaps this is a simplistic notion based on ignorance of the the complex politics of the region. Before the summer, I subscribed to that naive notion, but the rocket attacks on Israel convinced me that the Arabs are not currently acting in good faith. I am consequently inclined to support Israel more now than before. I don't think that it is in the interests of the West to abandon Israel.
