Put it this way. At the airport in St. Thomas EVERYBODY must go through US customs before boarding their flights, regardless of your final destination. You can't get into the terminal without going through customs. It's usually quick and easy. You just show your passport or birth certificate/driver's liscence combo and declare any items such as liquor/jewelry/tobacco and proceed through security and board your flight.

mrewak has it right.....as far as Customs is concerned YES YES YES You DO go through Customs traveling FROM the VI to the mainland or Puerto Rico. ( but not from the mainland or PR to the VI) .
The reason is, that, even though we are part of the USA and Americans do NOT need a passport to travel to or from here ( Immigration) the VI is considered 'outside' the US CUSTOMS zone. This was one of the parts of the purchase of the VI from Denmark in 1914, and the reason cigarettes, liquor jewelry watches et al are so unbelievably cheap here compared to the mainland.
An American gets I think, $700 dollars and 6 cartons of cigarettes ( at 14.00 a carton!) duty free through customs and really low duty on the balance..so keep your receipts, don't bring anything weird in your bags and its straight through. A note: In high season it can take an hour or more to get through, so really truly show up 2 hours ahead at the ST Thomas airport

As an American, I lived on an unique island interior the Caribbean for some years or so. a favorite island for celebs, etc. the stars love this island cuz the natives do not pester them, no paparazzi, etc. Myself, I had many problems w/ this island. maximum heavily, those stick out: one million. the way they take care of their animals (dogs, cats, etc) is in basic terms awful. particularly inhumane and wretching. One vet on the island and in basic terms the 'foreigners' used the amenities. Everytime I left my abode, i substitute into sickened at each and all the flea ridden, sick, 0.5 ineffective, dehydrated animals mendacity around everywhere. 2. Police. Our police would have some severe subjects, yet there the police are ineffective. in basic terms awful. If u have a situation, do not plan on using the police. A) they don't wanna become in contact. B) you've the recognition as somebody that even calls the police (undesirable!). relatives Violence? haha Police can't be in contact. Stolen motor vehicle/ or motor vehicle twist of fate? Ha! Police can not determine it out and noone has ins. besides. 3. get sick and choose scientific help? solid success. The wellness center is a 2000 sq.. foot ranch and there is one ambulance on the finished island. I had abdomen discomfort and went to the wellness center one nighttime-- the Dr pronounced, "it is going to be gallstones-- i will take them out for u if u like." 4. The natives, esp. men, will furnish and examine out and attraction u into each busines deal they ever dreamed of. 5. particularly everyone is conscious particularly everyone and that they look after themselves first. Gossip is rampant. And gossip on a small island blows speedier than the wind. 6. Water? Hahaha water. there is none till u pay an rather severe top classification- so lots greater advantageous than our 4.00 gal. gasoline--- so, pray for a brilliant style of rain. No warm showers. chilly ones could be feesible at 5 minutes a bathtub (and that's one high priced bathe). i could bypass on and on. yet, the pros? infrequently any racism. Love travelers from any united states because of the almight vacationer greenback. back abode" i've got discovered to get exhilaration from my water faucet furnish. I get exhilaration from that their is a shape and a police tension if u ever choose them. i've got discovered to become attentive to a participant, a candy talker from a mile in the back of me.

No, you do not have to pass through customs. As long as you have your ID you are good to go. The only time they do stop you is if you bring fruits, the fruits have to be frozen and double rapped in foil. The Virgin Islands is part of the United States. Everyone basically know each other because it is very small. I should know I was born and raised in St. Croix U.S.V.I.

Yeah, we know its a US territory, but you still have to pass through customs. When you get to immigration it is straight through though.

you need your passport only as a form of ID, it probably won't get stamped or anything.. because they won't take just a drivers license or anything anymore, its a new law from bush and the dept. of homeland security.
