Once when I went for reading glasses, the eye doctor told me that my astigmatism was from reading so much.
so if you follow the logic that smart people like to read (or at least the bookish ones who look the part) and read a lot, then eventually they could get astigmatism and need reading glasses.

Maybe that should be that the most avid readers are the ones who need reading glasses! (but then anyone who is highly educated would have to be very well read too)

But no, there is no correlation to poor eyesight and intelligence.

Everyone is intelligent in some way and everyone does not wear glasses, that is not a way to tell if someone is intelligent. More delayed developmental people wear glasses for their growth neurologically has been stifled. But a good majority of people will wear glasses at some point for your eyesight grows dim with age, like a camera lens or shutter, wear and tear. Call on an optometrist and ask them why they have so many patients and how many are super geniuses and he/she will laugh.

Reading and studying all the time doesn't necessarily make your eyes bad - most smart people had glasses when they were very young. I know I did. My theory is that glasses make you look like people's conception of a nerd, and they make you more of an outcast. So you don't waste your time on friends and the mall, you put more time into work and you are smarter as a result.

Just my theory.

How about natural selection? In the early days of mankind, having poor vision was a great handicap; the ones that couldn't see very well were more likely to be caught by predators and not survive to create more of themselves. This was offset by having a high degree of intelligence. That is, the worse your vision, the smarter you had to be to survive. Hence, intelligence and poor vision got linked. When modern times rolled around, poor vision became less of an issue - people could just get glasses. And they weren't being chased by sabre-tooth tigers anymore. But the genetic link was established and remains to this day.

Intelligence and educated are two different things. But many educated people do a lot of reading and this puts a strain on the eyes. Glasses correct this.

Well, I have known lots of smart people who don't wear glasses, but many do.
But many smart people are always reading & doing close work, they notice even small abberations in their eyesight and want them corrected immediately.
Is it more important for your Doctor or your plumber to wear glasses?
Which one would you rather have say "OOPS" during a procedure... LOL

Perhaps Reading books and staring at computer screens causes some sort of repetitive strain injury on your eye, thus leading to the need for glasses.

The more education you get, the more time you have to spend reading. You get near-sighted because you're not exercising your far-away vision enough. If you don't read much & you do spend lots of time on sports or other outdoor activities requiring faraway vision, you don't develop the need for glasses.
