Have you considered reodents?
There are many different kinds of good rodents for pets.
Carefresh is actually better than sawdust as it eliminates odor and saves the trees (not made from trees) but if you still want to use woodchips fine!
Water should always be supplied in a drip bottle because rodents tend to urinate and tip over the bowls of water. most rodents do not drink much so dont woory if you find they dont.
Gerbils
Gerbils are good pets. They are friendly and exicing. They love to burrow so maybe an aqurium would be best. They eat rodent food or specially designed gerbil food. In the cage you can put deep sawdust, bedding (shredded tissue paper), food, Water from a drip bottle, maybe some branches to climb and chew on and some toys. they are social so need to be kept in pairs.
Hamsters
Hamsters are popular pets and can be kept in any of the above cages. There are many hamster breeds some of them are: Chinese hamster, dwarf hamster, syrian hamster. There are lots of hamster foods avalible on the market. In the cage it would be good if you put a wood block so they can have somthing to chew on. hamsters love to roll around in a run-around-ball but dont leave them in their for too long. They enjoy an excercise wheel in their cage. They must be kept by themselves as they are solitary but dwarf and chinease can be kept in pairs.
Mice
I personally have mice and i love them. They can be kept in any of the above cages but be careful with wire cages as they can squeeze through the tiniest of spaces! They eat rodent food or specially prepared mouse food. They are very curious and love it if you can chance the setup of the cage now and again. They need a chew block to keep their teeth in shape. they love hamster balls and wheels. Toilet roll tubes are appreicated as a toy.
Rats
rats are very friendly and not like the wild breed vermin. they crave human attention. and love to be let out of the cage. they can learn their names and do tricks like a dog. They need to be kept in a big cage which can be very expensive preferably more than 1 level. Wire is best.
Rats are social and need t be kept in pairs or more. Males are bigger and a bit lazier. Females are smaller and more "hyper" lol They eat rat food or rodent (try to get rat)
Whatever pet you decide to get make sure you want it more than your kids because they will probably end up not caring for it.

What are the dimensions of the tank? Is it long or tall? If you get any reptile you still need to get different lighting and such. Turtles and reptiles will need heat lamps, screen top for ventilation and not the decorations. A water turtle probably could live in that with proper adjustments and ALOT of research. Turtles are much harder to keep than what people think and they also can have Salmonella which is deadly to children and even you. If you please add the dimensions part I can recommend some other things.

Maybe a small lizard, or an iguana, if you don't want fish or crabs. That or a furry rodent, like a rat or hamster. A 29 tank can be used for many different pets.

You should reconsider with cats. Cats are great pets for kids. They teach kids that animals are not all cute and cuddly, quite the opposite. If they jag off the cat enough it will retaliate. A cat figure "hmm that hand is my size and in my weight class i think I'll bloodily slaughter it". A few episodes like this kids get the message.

A snake. A small corn snake. They come in alot of cool colors.
You don't have to walk them. They don't make a lot of noise.
They don't requiire litter boxes. They do not need to be fed every day. They are very gentle and do not bite. If you get a baby,
they get used to being handled quickly. I wear mine wrapped around my arm, a lot. It likes to curl up on the back of the couch.
Snakes are not slimy either. They are very smooth to the touch.
Also they have long life spans if taken cae of. My kids love Sneaky
Snake. He's been a part of our family for years, now.

Guinea pigs are great...... they do not usually bite and are fairly easy to care for plus they can live in a fish tank. Only things is you must learn how to hold a guinea pigs when moving it around because like rabbits they can break there own backs, but this is rare.

I would try a parakeet or budgie as properly called but, they are in- expensive. The bird will be about $20.00, The cage is about $ 20.00 and food is about five dollars. They can live for many years if properly taken care of and they have a beautiful voice in the morning.

snakes. tarantula's, ferrets, hamsters, guinea pigs. mice, sorry all of the gross things like in glass cages.
Maybe frogs. newts, an ant colony *(put a tight lid on it)
depending on the ages of your children and if you think they are responsible enough to take care of thier pets, or is this another chore and something that you will need to take the time to care for?

I would suggest turtles, though they dont move around as much as other animals they are still a fun pet to have. You could also try frogs, hamsters, snakes, and lizards.

Try dogs. Or cats. Find out what they are not alergic to. Try to find out what they like. Maby they like some animal that you don't even know about. Try to get them to tell you.
