Mr. Badwrench is headed in the right direction. Best bet is it is the ignition switch (not lock cyld), Pontiac has had problems with them getting hot. There has also been some fires reported. Call a Pontiac dealer with the VIN to see if your car is involved. If it is they will come get it and repair what is covered under the recall.

Did you check the main bus fuse under the hood? It is located in a black box on the wheel well and looks like a solid strip of metal(shiny) that is screwed down. The starting circuit and the circuit used for accessories (lights etc) are different. If that checks out fine, then the next step is the ignition itself. These have a rare occurrence of going to the dark side, but it is on the list of things to check. Next, does this car have the starting relay module. Lots of cars use this relay so that large wires do not have to travel up the steering column, and smaller wires connected to a relay are utilized. This module is rather on the high side of expense, so if it does need a new one, check your local auto recycle yard such as a "U-Pull It" type yard. Your very BEST bet is to have it towed to an Auto Electric shop and let them diagnose and fix it. It is cheaper than the dealer and faster, AND easier on you trying to search for all these different fix-its. Good luck and happy motoring!

Ignore the suggestions to check the Theft system, the starter works independently of the Theft system on this vehicle! Try shifting to Neutral and see if it will start there. Also, check the connectors that go to the fuse block on the LH side of the dash, there may be corrosion present. An ignition switch may also cause this concern.

Call your local Pontiac dealer and see if they know, you describe to them the symptoms. Of course , you may hear "Well , we can't tell untill you bring it in", which means $$, but you may get one that may give you an idea. 2. Find a local shop that will give you a free dignostic on it, then you can (may) get the part yourself and install. It's got to be either the relay , the flasher itself , or in the turn signal arm actuator. The first 2 are cheaper , the arm assembly can be removed (with some work) and cleaned if it's corroded , but it's easier to replace it , but it's about $60 to $80.

Does the theft system light flash with the key on? That light should come on when the key is turned on, but go off after a few seconds. If it comes on then starts to flash it means that you have a problem with the theft deterrent system. If the light is flashing, try this. Turn the key off, then turn the key on and leave it on for about 10-12 minutes. If the light goes out after 12 minutes, then turn the key off for 10 seconds. Try to start the car. If it starts, then you have an intermittent theft system problem. If this procedure doesn't pinpoint the problem, it's possible that you have an ignition switch problem.
