Do you go by the race of your father (black, but very light) or your mother (who is white)? To look at him, he looks white. You would never know that his father is black.

Most paperwork nowadays have the choice of "Other". I was taught that you went by the race of the father, and I have heard that Native American Indians go by the tribe of the fathers father or in other words the paternal grandfather

I looked at the answers you have so far received. READ this one, it is the CORRECT ANSWER! Asking age, religion, sex and especially Race, are Illegal Questions on an Application Form. If this is a medical, that also is unnecessary. By the year 2010, over 97% of the WORLD will be of colour. There is no longer a bi-racial,tri-racial it is now multiracial and with the explosion of the DNA factors - we should all know by now, that on the Inside, we are ALL the SAME, well almost everything, not our personalities, genetic diseases, etc. But you know what I mean. Tell your friend, any company that is still practising that Illegal Law, should be reported and to definitely NOT work for them. Good Luck...

"race" as put down on forms and applications is meaningless anyway -- most of the terms used on those things have nothing to do with "race," which itself is an arbitrary and nonsensical term. They're holdovers from earlier times when people thought that if your skin color was different or you had unique facial features that you were a different "race," which DNA and genetics have proven completely invalid. There is no such thing, for example, as a "caucasian" or "white" race. Look it up.

My own children are products of mixed cultures (I'm mostly european and my wife is filipino) -- when I fill out school forms, etc. for them, I always check the "other" box, and put in "human race." Once a school principal called me and said I had to fill in the form properly for them to get certain kinds of federal money -- I told her that she really needed to keep up on genetics and anthropology, and that my answer was the only correct one possible on the form. She gave up and left it as-is. :)

this could be a brilliant question and is derived up lots now! one million. the solid information is that our international is turning out to be greater mixed than ever. All races are spreading the affection toddler. 2. Even greater advantageous information is that i these days observed a decision on a style of varieties that pronounced "Pacific Islander". i'm particular it ability Hawaiian yet WHO CARES! LoL! i like the way it sounds, plus I stay in California. So i will apply "Pacific Islander" any further. 3. So interior the destiny in basic terms mark "different" and then have exciting with the definition. the alternative is for demographic stat comments whether it makes a brilliant style of mixed human beings experience like crap (while having to pick). I work as a social worker and on my intake i have a place that has black\white to check. So most apps should have the same type of spot, but if not just put black\white.

He can choose. He can also select other, or no answer - those are usually options to. But I would recommend that he selects whichever he identifies with - or, for that matter, wants others to identify him with.

It's interesting though. There are so many cultures, and so many people who have mixed cultures, but we are still supposed to check either Caucasian, African-American, Asian-American, Latin-American, and of course "Other".

Maybe we should all check OTHER from now on, since hardly anyone fits into these categories anymore.

If I were your friend, I would simply circle both races and if the employer asks questions, explain it and ask them if there is a problem with that. Its not like he can pick one and ignore the other.

You don't have to choose any race on a job application so why should he feel pressured to choose one now? Equal Opportunity Employers don't require this information so why are you so hung up on it?

Anything he wants to!

If it's a scholarship for African-Americans, a school with few African-Americans, or any other place where affirmative action still exists, go black. If "very conservative" (ie racist) people are going to be reading it, go white. Or, go both!
