he buys most of his clothes from Burtons but I can't afford there prices.

I have seen a similar top that he generally wears from a local shop that sells them at prices that I can afford on my wages from my xmas job.

he is the kind of guy that only drinks lager and never thinks of buying cheap clothing as his mother hasn't tought him a good lesson in buying on a budget as yet due to his age

No. Clothes are a very personal thing.

If he only shops at Burtons there's a reason for it. He's probably thoroughly dislike your top as it doesn't have the Burtons label.

Buy him a posh bottle of wine instead.

Definitely, and if You can pack a homemade picnic and head to a river or a park for lunch or dinner..... make it an event to remember! make do with what You can on a budget, its amazing how far money can really stretch!

well if you have the kind of relationship that you feel is close enough to buy him a gift then do it! but if your intentions are more romantic from your side than his, i would be careful as there could be problems after, go with your instinct! good luck! x

Guys like clothes too, and if he wont wear it then screw him. He should just be happy for the kind gesture.
