Holding a metal object that you touch the thing that'll shock you works. The charge still goes through your body, but it enters your hand from the object across a large area instead of via a small spark, so no one nerve is stimulated sufficiently for you to notice it.

Shocks happen in dry environments, as a result of friction charging the particles on your body. The static shock is the feeling of the charge being released from your body.

To avoid this you can reduce friction (don't drag your feet on a rug or don't wear socks while walking on a rug) or reduce the dryness of the environment through a humidifyer. You can also just periodically lightly spray the carpet or air with water to reduce dryness and prevent the shock.

Hold something like a metal key in your hand and touch the something that you would probably get a shock from. There will still be a static discharge but it will go between the key and the something, not to your finger - and you won't feel it.

static electricity is caused by an unbalance of negative or positive electrons.this imbalance is crated when electrons transfer from one body to another[socks rubbing on carpet, etc]the electrons want to get balanced so thy will transfer to another unbalanced body if it gets near.this coses the electric shock.so unless you have a device that can detect unbalanced bodes, your out of luck
