Should America be a society that values and promotes it's various ethnic and cultural backgrounds? Should America be a country where many languages are spoken, many diverse traditions are observed and respected? Or should all people, regardless of ethnicity, religion or history, be expected to conform to a homogenous norm?

Diversity, please!!! God help us if one group imposes it's will on everyone else; that's totalitarianism Dude, like Russia or China used to be like! Or even worse, like Iran, Saudi Arabia; or North Korea is today! Yikes!!!

We can only survive through unity. We need every person in this nation to read, write, and speak the English language. Separatism is at the core of widespread hate and violence.
Think of a football team. We have the diversity of each players individual knowledge, skill, and experience. We have the diversity of offense and defense and special teams. We have the diversity of each position played on each of those teams. We have the diversity of the plays in the playbook, and the strategy and tactics of each game. This diversity is celebrated, but is not allowed to exist in place of unity. So, the question is, what makes all this diversity work so well for each team. The answer? Unity! Let me say it again, UNITY! Everyone single person in the organization has the same goal and speaks the same language; in this case, both the English language and the language of football. If these talented players, coaches, and support staff didn't have the same goals and speak the same language, there would be no chance, none at all, for success.
It's a simple model, but it applies to our society in it's entirety. We've made the mistake of allowing people to come to America and put their diversity ahead of any common goal. Unfortunately, any attempt to remedy the situation before our downfall, is met with cries of racism etc. when that is not the case.

Culture is competely different in eras of years, and in locations spanning the entire earth. There are different identities in societies from all over, which includes all of mankind. Each culture is different from the other. Ideas, gifts, abilities, trades, cultures, etc .. when combined all together .. by people from all different areas of the world, promotes development, new ideas, economix growth, and much more. America accepts all cultures. America uses each culture's existance in a positive way to promote intellectual achievement. Each individual culture in American can grow, and can achieve .. and each culture is accepted. Have you ever heard the saying "it takes all kinds to make the world go around"? This is cultural diversity. And we have culture diversity right here in America .. and it grows strong .

I don't think it "should" be anything. We'll have to wait and see how it evolves. It'll probably be a bit of both. It would be a pity to lose the cultural diversity that has taken generations to develop, on the other hand, I find racial homogeneity quite appealing. Hybrid people are quite beautiful

Diversity is the best. However, in regards to language, English is the de facto national language in the US. So, just as I would be expected to use Spanish in everyday dealings in a Spanish speaking country (as a resident of that country), so immigrants to the US should be expected to use English.

America should have as many varieties as possible and everyone should speak the top three most spoken languages. People should value diversity and accept it. Sadly, America is far, far from this. But one day, I hope, people will understand that being different is not always bad.

I have no problem if you want to speak another language at home, but if you are going to live and function in America you should at least know how to speak English. As for their traditions and cultures, go for it! I don't care if you want to celebrate the Chinese New Year or Cinco De Mayo or whatever else, but when trying to buy a hamburger or rent a truck or grocery shop speak the language!

I am not sure how to say this with out offending anyone.. so will first say no offense intended.. Now I do think that american should be for AMERICANS! I think it is totally stupid that america provides assistance and help for foringers more so than american that are in dyer need. hlep the american that are here now and then help the outsiders..
