I'm going to be applying to law school and will need recomendation letters. Is simply mailing former professors at my undergraduate school a letter explaining my situation and asking them if they could do it okay, or should I talk to them in person or on the phone?

But I work during the day, and the professors I'd be asking don't have night classes.

Also, I graduted a year ago and now live about 2 hours away from the school. So even if I could find a time to ask in person it would be difficult to pull off.

But I am simply trying to scrape together some recomendations. When I went to college I simply went to class did the work and got out. I dind't kiss @$$ or do any clubs or anything. So yeah, I am just trying to scrape together some recomendations.

And I can't provide stamped envelopes for them because they have to be sent in school envelopes du to LSAC procedures.

You should definitely ask them in person. See if you can get out of work for a day (or visit when college is in session but work is not). I know this won't be easy, but the extra effort you extend will be well worth it.

First, they'll think you actually really care about their recommendation (versus just trying to scrape together some recommendations) and secondly, it will give both of you a chance to catch up and presumably allow the professor a better opportunity to give better insight on your recommendation.

While you probably already know this, provide stamped envelopes to them with the address of where the letters need to go. If you're worried they might forget, send a thank-you note a week later or so (this is a nice gesture if they have already done it and will gently remind them if they haven't).

Definately in person because it shows a sign of respect and they are more likely to say yes. You can also tell them directly what needs to be done and what needs to be included in the letter and you can thank them personally.

It is a matter of courtesy to ask them in person.
