One Christmas when I was around 9 or 10, we got up earlier than our parents and went into the living room. There was only one pile of presents, so we sat down and opened them (there were 5 of us), then shared them among us. Mother came downstairs as we were finishing and asked what we were doing. When we explained, she laughed and said, "Those are all Vicki's (me) presents. You're supposed to look for the rest."
It was a lovely surprise. We never expected to get a lot of presents because we were quite poor. This must have been the time things began to improve for us.
This was one of the few times when we didn't get into a fight over something.
