Its not called McCarthyism any more. Its using phrases like "War on Terror" to get people to go along with flimsy evidence in going to war. Its like using the "support the troops" battlecry to stymie all forms of debate...calling people who challenge a government that they are less patriotic because they aren't going with the program.
Dissent is a birthright of all Americans, where if you disagree with something your government is doing than you have right to speak out. So now they shame you by hiding behind the troops so the government can take away more rights which people are willing to give away because they have been trick into a civil duty.

If by McCarthyism you mean a witch hunt, yes, I would say there are witch hunts in the U.S. The three groups who are being made the subject of witch hunts are: illegal aliens, registered sex offenders and homosexuals.
All three of these groups are blamed by society for social ills, but the evidence used to support legislation against them is usually very thin.
