Buy a polycarbonate hard case.
leather WILL scratch your ipod.
Right now I am using the Griffin iclear, it scratch resistant, safe, secure, doesn't add too much "balk", and allows use for all the "buttons" on the ipod even a dock connector.

Go to the apple store at a local shopping center,or online,and buy a clear cover,so your ipod is protected without looking gay.

By some thin plastic covers available at most major electronic places.
Even a PDA style screen protector will work.
It's a thin piece of film that you can lay over the top and replace as it gets dirtied up.
