The closest American cars that are similar to Mercedes would be their cousins Chrysler, since they are both Daimler Chrysler products and share parts.
The closet American competition would be the Cadillac line by GM.

Which Mercedes-Benz do you mean? Daimler-Chrysler make everything from taxis to super-luxury sedans and sporty roadsters and trucks. The M-class is mostly built in the USA. There are plenty of American cars that were faster or had more acceleration, or more silly luxuries or a softer ride. None of these have much to do with overall quality. People used to say that if a component needed six bolts, Mercedes-Benz would use six, Rolls-Royce would use eight and most American manufacturers would try to get away with five.

Some US cars had more performance but you can always get more performance by banging in a bigger engine.

The point about Mercedes-Benz was that they had a well-engineered combination of safety, durability, handling with outright acceleration not being a factor of great interest to them or their customers. They also made a point of avoiding most of the bad taste evident in so many American cars over the past 55 years.

A combination of good handling, relatively modest size and high top speeds in their more expensive cars meant they were fast over the narrow roads and hills found in much of western Europe. Another factor was that until fairly recently a limited model range meant they could afford to put more design work into each model.

In my opinion M-B have lost the plot by over-equipping their vehicles with electronic gizmos which have detracted from their reputation for reliability. I can do without a motorised luggage compartment lid thanks and climate control is too complex compared to straight forward air conditioning. There are also far too many models.

I seems to me that you want a car that is American made and has the quality of a German car well good luck but i must agree with everyone else in saying that if u must stick with cars that are made in the US buy a US company with US parts then GM is ur company they have there little quirks but overall they will outlast any car from ford or chrysler. Except the Chryslers that us MB parts. The Crossfire for example if basically a last generation SLK320 (R170) They decided not to use the SLK retractable hardtop due to keeping cost down. Also in the Dodge Magnum the cruise control stalk is strait from a Mercedes

Firstly I would like to say that Jaguar and Aston Martin though owned by Ford are not American cars. If that is the case then the whole Chrysler group is German. These two companies are English and still have a great English heritage. VW now owns Lamborghini but we all know that Lamborghinis are Italian and not German.

It is true that the Cadillac is the closest competitor to the Merc but it has not had quite the executive appeal as the German car has enjoyed over the years. In reality the SUV (Escalade) is by far better than the ML but you will be hard pressed to find a Cadillac that would compete with the AMG versions of the fleet.

Being a long time Mercedes owner, I am so dissapointed in my latest 2005 CLK that I am going to look at the (choke) Japanese AND American cars in a year when I buy again. My care is expensive to maintain, it has these crazy slim profile times that don't last and blow easily. It's just not the great design that Mercedes was so famous for for so many years. Maybe it's just because everyone else has caught up. Snobs still love Mercedes. But if you really look at them critically, they are not the quality they used to be.

I'd say newer Chryrslers are starting to use more Merc Componants. And there is the Dodge Sprinter Van, which is a Mercedes Benz in all but the badge on the Grill ;)

kope said it all. the problem is having GM manufacturing Cadillac is the problem. MB is by its own isw a whole group of fancy cars and thats it! they are concentrated!! What do you expect from a company that manufactures cavaliers and malibus?!?! but still you have the Toyota with its luxurious brand Lexus which only appeared in 1991 but really rocked the world. bottomline...i think GM aren't doing its best to conquer the luxury car world like it used to 30 or 40 yrs ago.

MBZ has dropped the ball as of late, but they are trying to get back on track since trying to be all things to all people(going for the short-term buck), has bitten them in the @ss.

That said, no, to date Germany creates the most technologically advanced cars on the planet. It's one reason why an Lexus LS looks like a knock-off of an S-Class. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...

It depends on which MB model you are referring to. The closest competitor that is American made is Cadillac. The "v" series are meant to be an American offering that can compete with the performance series MB's. There is the CTS-V which is in the same category as the c-class; the STS - V which is somewhere between the e-class and s-class and the XLR - V which is the competition for the hard top convertibles.
