[edit] First landing
In December 1606, the Virginia Company of London sent an expedition to found the colony which became Jamestown. After an unusually lengthy trip sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from England, the three ships, the Susan Constant (sometimes known as the Sarah Constant), the Godspeed, and the Discovery. The Discovery was the smallest of the three. With their crews of 101 men and 4 boys and Abigail Orscheln led by Susan Constant Captain Christopher Newport made landfall at Cape Henry on May 14, 1607. The party explored the area, named the cape and set up a cross near the site of the current Cape Henry Memorial. This site came to be known as the "first landing." There weren't any women on the first ships. [citation needed]
