A day of thanks for being rich enough to afford gluttony.

People say it's a day of thanks, but I think that the gluttony argument may be the stronger. Sure, some people may be thankful for what they have, their privelege and comfort in a world full of poverty and suffering, family and friends, health, etc. However, I don't really think that that's what Thanksgiving is about to most Americans. I don't think that most people are really appreciative of the good parts of their lives, but are instead preoccupied by wants and what they don't have. Thus huge trends in debt and materialism. Many peple get together on Thanksgiving out of obligation, not a true desire to see their families. Football, food and shopping take primacy over fellowship. Thanksgiving not only constitutes a gluttonous feast of food, but marks the beginning of the disgusting "shopping season".

I guess it's about family. I split the holiday into two days. On Thanksgiving, we spend the day with my boyfriend's family. We spend a lot of time talking and hanging out, before and after the food is ready. My family will eat Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. It's good to get together and be thankful that we have so much. We don't eat until we can't eat anymore. But it's good just to be with the people you love whenever you can.

A day of Thanksgiving and a celebration of Life, and giving Thanks to the Lord for the food that is on the table so that you all can eat until you are full

Gluttony--but isn't it great??

I am thankful every day of the year. I don't need a federal holiday for that.

its both!!! we celebrate the end of the fall harvest season by eating a lot, although most people go out and buy food themselves instead of harvesting. but i just have to say this, i would take my grandpop's homegrown tomatoes over some storebought ones any day of the week!

A day to give thanks that we live in times of plenty and have enough so that we can indulge in gluttony?
