I have tried sliding it down, keeping my fingers off the bottom, but it won't budge!

You do slide it, very difficult though, i helped with my thumb nail in the gap between the cover and pone.
The cover for the memory stick is equally hard, just pull it (honestly) I thought it was going to break.

i got this phone, you gotta kind off push it down just below the camera sliding thingy and than slide down - its a little tricky.
