I am from Baltimore. A friend of mine's father is a longshoremen and makes really decent money. My husband is still trying to find his career path, he is currently doing HVAC work and is burnt out by doing the same thing since he was a teenager, he is now 25. Does anyone know what it takes, or how one can becomea longshoremen, especially in Baltimore?

Firstly, he has to join the Longshoremans Union. Then apprentice until he reaches the job or level he wants.

The other poster is right, go to the longshoremen's union and they will make you an apprentice then you may find a job later. I am from the Baltimore area and I know that the port of baltimore has seen less and less cargo in recent years and have heard that it is more difficult to be a longshoreman in baltimore than in other port towns. Also, I think it takes more skills to work in HVAC than as a longshoremen since I thought that longshoremen were one of a few jobs that were considered unskilled labor but still paid a good wage.
