I use the same washing powder and fabric conditioner as my friend yet her clothes have a lovely distinctive smell, I wash on a 40 degree wash and cannot get my clothes to smell of anything. What am I doing wrong?

I have tried using loads of fabric cond'r, Febreze etc, tumble drying and on the line. I have asked her what she does and I do exactly the same thing unless there's something she's not telling

She might have a perfume that she uses? Or, perhaps it is a freshener, like Febreeze that she uses on her clothes after hanging them up?

Probably nothing. Your friends clothes probably smell good to you because we become accustomed to our own smells easily. Laudry dried outside on a washing line always smells better than laundry dried in the house because you get accustomed to the smell in the house but when it's brought in from outside it smells fresh to you. I use airel powder and comfort sun fresh - or lily and riceflower and my washing smells gorgeous when it comes out of the machine but a couple of days on the clotheshorse and you have to really sniff it to smell the fabric softener. It's not the same when dried out on the line, it smells great. Hope that helps :)

Its a fact that washing clothes at 30 degrees in modern machines is as effective at cleaning, so perhaps this would help produce a nicer smell, with less heat?

The best way is to hang your clothes to dry outside whenever the weather permits. Its much better than hanging them indoors!

It could have something to do with the water in your house, or the water pipes. Do you both get your water from the same source? If not, try adding a small amount of water softener to each load of laundry. I have to do that because our water is so hard and has such a high mineral content. I use powdered Calgon, about 1/4 cup per load.

In my opinion, a nothing smell is a good smell. Fragranced clothing gives many people allergic reactions.
For an extra clean and non-perfumed smell, I add vinegar to the rinse cycle.

Wash with Gain detergent. Try Bounce with Febreeze. It will take out odors and give your laundry a nice smell. The smell may also be from the fragrance that she uses every day.
