Understanding first because it overcomes a lot of the trials one is sure to meet along the road.

Honesty, sex, common interests, love...

Once you have all these you can have the good marriage.

Note that I put love last and the reason for that is a lot of marriages work just fine without love and some have love and do not work.

This answer comes from a 60 year old man, so I hope you don't mind.
Being the best of friends. My wife, and I were. We were lovers, and the best of Friends. We married when she was 15, and I was 20, so I guess you could say we grew up together. She died in a car accident when she was only 49. We saw hard times, and good times, but we were always able to sit and talk about our problems. If one of us had a bad day, we could sense it, and sit down, and talk about it.
I apologize if my answer has been to long, and boring.

Communication! You need to be able to communicate anything to each other, no matter how difficult the topic. Being honest and sharing you thoughts and of course listening to the other person! Communication needs to go both ways!

I think being best friends, is the key, if you really like each other There are people who love each other but don't like each other. Some one who you can grow old with, someone who you can tell anything to without them juding you or telling you how you feel.
