I'll use an example to make it clearer. If a girl was a 34D, this would mean the measurement of her ribcage (not including the breasts themselves) would be 34 inches. This is also known as the band size. The measurement can be determined by measuring under the bust and adding a certain number of inches to allow for the fact that the ribcage expands.

The letter refers to the number of inches for the cup size to fit the breasts. In this case, D means the cup size will allow for 4 inches. So altogther you have a band size of 34 inches and a cup size of 4 inches, which means the girl would have a 38 inch measurement altogether, around her breasts and ribcage.

Here are the number of inches for the other cup sizes:

AA - 0 inches
A - 1 inch
B - 2 inches
C - 3 inches
D - 4 inches
DD - 5 inches

Determining your Bra/Band size
(ribcage circumference measurement)
1. Measure around the chest directly under the breast at a constant height with the cloth measuring tape. Add 5 inches to that measurement. This dimension is your bra/band size (If the bra size works out to an ODD number go up one inch to the next EVEN number.) This should equal the circumference around the chest, directly above the breasts/under the arms.
2. Now measure around the chest at the height of the fullest part of the breast. The measuring tape should be held horizontal, flat on your back, and your arms should be down. Make a note of that measurement (only used for comparison) and compare it to the Bra Size from step 1.
Determining your Cup size
(projection of breasts from chest wall)
3. To determine the proper Cup Size, find the difference between step 2 and step 1 (step 2 - step 1.) Use the chart below to determine your Cup Size.

The letter is the cup size and the number is how far around it is. for example a lot of women are 36inches around but all have different cup sizes (the letter of the bra size)

The numbers are the frame; the diameter just below the breast.

The letter represents how many inches your breasts are. Go to this link for the chart:

It goes A30 to A40 and then B30 to B40 etc up to DD. A30 is the smallest women's bra you can buy but I think that there are bigger sizes than DD40, especially in the large section.

In American sizing:
The number is the inches around the woman's torso just below her breasts.
The letter is indicative of how many inches her breasts are bigger than the number.

eg. 32 inch torso with 34 inch around breasts = 32B
