A of couple months ago I got my first pair of rats.(females) Ones a beige hooded, the other a beige bershire. (maroon colored eyes, depending on time of day)Since the day I got them, they've been in the same cage, same litter brand, same food, same everything. Latley I've been noticing my Daisy (Beige Hooded) has had blood around her left eye. I red that sometimes when there under stress they leek porphryn from there eyes and nose but she has not been under any stress what so ever. She is welly taken care of and don't know what the problem could be? Can some please help me!?

*Note- I do have a yellow lab in the house that has come in contact with them...allergies?

It's probably poryphin. Is the stuff around her eye slightly orange-ish, and a little more transparent than blood? Typically, blood is much darker and redder, and dries almost black.

Sometimes rat eyes leak poryphin regardless of stress level. It's not really anything to be concerned about, as this happens with many rats. If it starts to build up or appears to bother her, you can use a damp paper towel to wipe around her eyes. You might want to double-check what you're feeding your girls... sometimes excess protein can increase production of poryphin.

If, for some reason, it is blood, my suggestion would be to trim her nails. Several of my rats have scratched their eyes/faces and drawn a little blood because their nails were too long.

blood usually is not a sign of alleries. there could be an injury from playing or fighting with the other rat. please take the poor little guy to vet
