If you are just looking for something to take up the space, rock such as river gravel will do, but if you want to possibly use the area for some sun chairs, consider pavers. Depending on where you live, the cost could be approx. $12-16 per sq ft installed. Check out some website for products such as E.P. Henry or Belgard, a division of Old Castle.

Take a look at sources of rock locally. We could say "Get lava" or "use river stone" but that will do you little good if you cant get it where you live, or if the cost is prohibitively expensive. I'm lucky where I live having a landscape supply place with a large choice of rock to choose from. Find a similar place and go take a look at what is available and at what price, that will ultimately give you your best ideas as to what can actually work for you,

Buy something by the ton, probably white or red lava rock.
Either way, make sure you lay thick layers of newspaper down on th e ground or plastic before you lay the rock.
If for some reason you ever change your mind and don't want the rock, without the newspaper or plastic holding the rock in - you'll be picking out rocks for an eternity. you'll never find them all and it will drive you crazy.

River rock is the most attractive and natural looking, it also comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. It blends well with the environment. White rock or lava rock is cheap, and it looks cheap. Ones own personal preference I suppose.

Depends on what you like, & whether you ever will walk on it.
2 inch to 1/2 inch is small enough to walk on easily. River stones or crushed decomposed granite are often used, but I have also seen lava rock (volcanic tuft) a lovely reddish brown.
;-)
