I remeber I was living with my aunt at the time, but I was home alone. I was doing my homework when the phone rang. I picked up and the first thing my friend said was, "Haadeeyah, Aaliyah died!"
I was devastated. I literally broke down into tears and sobs on the phone, I felt like my heart was being wrenched out of my body.
I said, "how do you know?"
and she said, "turn on the tv."
So I went into the living room and turned the tv on. I nearly callapsed with relief but still a little sad at such a talented singer's death. I walked back to the phone and said, "oh, I thought you were talking about my mom."

I can imagine how relieved you may have felt but, just because you would not want to see your mother die, does not mean you cannot have a big enough heart to mourn for other people.
The feeling I got when I heard of Aaliyah's death was the same feelin that came over me when 9/11 happened and Katrina and Princess Di and Mother Theresa... It felt like my heart dropped and I thought the world was ending more and more as these events were occurring. A wakeup call really. A reminder that life can be taken from anyone at any given moment, no matter how young or healthy you or angelic you may be.

How tragic ... when they tell you your plane is overloaded, believe it! That plane was overloaded because her people didn't want to take 2 planes a little later in the day. Instead, everything they had, including musical equipment, was crammed into a plane that simply couldn't get to altitude after it just barely got off the ground.

I'm not even a big R&B fan, but she was pretty good in Romeo Must Die and her songs were cool. I think she had a huge career ahead of her, in both movies and music. Her death was a tragedy.
