Is it unbearably hot and humid for most of the summer and really cold and snowy for most of the winter, or are these extremes that come in spurts?

It is absolutely beautiful, which makes some of the weather extremes more tolerable.

I live in S.E. Wisconsin and can tell you that right now (mid-afternoon) it's almost 60 degrees with calm air and very sunny, unseasonably warm. You just never know what the weather will bring in any given week during any season. Today could have been quite cold and snowy or even 70 degrees. That's the fun part of living in the north!

On average the summers can be hot and humid but we've also had some very chilly summers. Winter can get well below zero but in recent years our winters as well as the snowfall amounts have been quite mild. Many people think of Wisconsin as being like Alaska or the North Pole but it "ain't" so. We have all four seasons and relish every one of them. We do take full advantage of summer because we have many months that aren't real warm.

All in all... I wouldn't trade the four seasons for anything. I would seriously miss fall in Wisconsin. It's so gorgeous that you just want to be outside for every second of it. My brother always says that when the rest of the country finds out about our mild winters this will become a very popular place to live. We have excellent services, an incredible number of summer events, all kinds of things to do in fall and winter, and in general have a fabulous place to live.

I actually grew up closer to Green Bay, but we had just as much, if not more, water around us than what runs past LaCrosse. During the summer, it was definitely more humid than I would have liked (the saying "It's not so much the heat as the gosh darn humidity" did not come into play for no reason). But I liked the winters. Sure, it gets cold and icky, and by March you're ready for it to be warm again, but nothing beats having snow at Christmas. In my area we've actually gotten a decreasing amount of snowfall over the last several years, but it still gets cold. There's usually a week in January-ish that it gets cold enough to close school (too cold for kids to be out waiting for the buses), but other than that, it's bearable if you dress right.

Extremes, you may find one month in each season that is extreme like that. For the most part it's farily average.

It's funny because in the Winter, when the temps hit 30, people will ditch their jackets.

In the summer, when the temps hit 60, people will be wearing a sweatshirt.

The change of season is really nice though.

It is so hot and humid in the summer that you cannot breathe right, and you can fry eggs on your head. In the winter it is so cold that birds freeze solid in midair and fall to the ground. In the summer, flies, in the winter, packs of roaming hungry wolves. In the spring it does nothing but rain for weeks at a time and the streets flood from all the melting snow and you must travel by canoe. In the autumn though, it is beautiful. Colored leaves, cool crisp air, blue skies, moderate temperatures. The fall is lovely here in LaCrosse,...........except for the bats !
