Or about your surroundings or about something you notice near by. If you've heard about them before from someone else, you an ask how they know that person. It doesn't have to be a deep conversation, just about there here and now if you get me...

You don't have to say anything in the beginning. A great friendly smile usually eases the tension and allows the other person to open up instead. Then you can carry on from there.
