The people who previously stated that by using 7-Up/Sprite or any other softdrink that contains citric acid are correct. The sugar and citric acid mixed with equal parts of water and adding a drop of chlorine (prevents scum from forming in the water) will help keep your tree lasting much longer. Make sure the water in the reservoir remains filled with the solution the entire time you have the tree in your home. Lemonade (pulp-free) can also be substituted for 7-Up/Sprite.

NOTE: If you really want to extend the life of your tree, I'd strongly recommend using a product called "Cloud Cover". It is an anti-transpirant designed to cut down moisture loss through the leaves/needles of trees as well as protecting plants/trees in your yard from frost damage.

I've sprayed "Cloud Cover" on my Christmas trees and it's kept the Christmas tree green and fresh looking until New Years. You can find "Cloud Cover" at some of your hardware stores or by purchasing it online.

It really is amazing stuff!

Hope this information was of some help to you. GOOD LUCK!

A can of 7up or a cup of sugar or a couple aspirins put in the water within the reservoir of the tree holder, all help to keep the tree moist extending the life of the needles, so the tree isn't all brittle and looking like Charlie Brown's. Oh yeah and most tree lot's or Department stores sell pre-packaged products for that purpose.

My parent's always put Karo corn syrup in the water, but I'm not sure of how much. It's important to make sure you don't damage the bark at the bottom, because that is how the tree draws the water from the basin.
Personally, I'm allergic, so we have plastic trees. They're always green...
