There's two things to consider: the maturity level of the kid and the specific movie. For instance, one 13-year-old may be more mature and more able to handle and understand things better than another 13-year-old. The parent knows their child better than anyone. The R-rating is a very wide category. Some films can have no violence, nudity or sex but still get an R for having 6 or 7 "f words" in. Some are stronger and have lots of graphic violence, torture and gore. Some of these "harder" R's may have been trimmed only by a few seconds to avoid an NC-17.

I honestly think around 17. Even though i know that many kids start at a much younger age it still dosent seem right. Parents think that showing a rated R movie to a 5 year old won't do much since they'll "forget" but it can carry on. Since I am younger than 18 I seriously refrian from watching them since rated R movies are rated that way for a reason. For some reason there so much more graphic and gory etc. But sadly some people nowadays enjoy watching things not suitable for their age...like 7 year olds...

I also have to side with the opinion that it really has to do with the maturity level of the child instead of a chronological age.

I've been watching R movies on my own since 7th grade. I love horror and action/ martial arts movies, which tend to get an R rating. At the time, we lived in a small town that only had 1 theater. My mom hated having to take me to see the movies I wanted to (she's very squemish) so she was able to clear it with the theater management that I could see R rated movies on my own, and that she would drop me off and pick me up afterwards.

But that requires a parent to really know their children- what do they want to see, why do they want to see it, etc. If a parent doesn't spend time watching shows and movies with their kids and seeing how their kids are, a parent won't know enough to make an informed judgement on their children's maturity level.

I think that is a sad sign as to the rise of all of the ratings systems for video games, tv shows (all of which I didn't grow up with)... it takes less effort to use a "rating" to determine if a child should watch something or not, versus taking the time to learn about and watch these things for yourself (especially with your child) and making choices tailored to you and your child.

There are several different reasons for a movie to be R rated. Adult content. graphic violence, Graphic and unacceptable language,Disturbing or graphic sexual content. It is my opinion that many of these movies are not fit for ANYONE of ANY AGE to watch so they should NEVER be viewed by children. TO many violent movies and killings on movies have lowered the value of life in the minds of our society. If we continue on in this direction we will soon have the same problem with radical religious extremist/ politically motivated terrorist and assassins. lets get back to a kinder less objectionable, more comedic source of entertainment.

I don't think it should be based on how old they are, but how mature they are. I know 20 year olds that are old enough to watch rated R movies, but not mature enough to handle the contents like an adult
