.....my sister used to tell me I'd make someone a wonderful wife. At the time I thought she was teasing me, but maybe she was being serious, and now 20 years down the line - is it too late to make the switch?

....my sister did actually think I was gonna have a sex change, for complicated reasons relating to my background. I often wonder if my life would've turned out better if I had.

That's a question that you really should be asking yourself, I'd love to say yes, but it's not down to me. you need to seek the proper psychiatric/medical help, it's the only way. take it from someone who knows, the world becomes a very scary place when you decide to make the switch.

Something like this is so personal and situational that no one will be able to answer it for you, only you can. Before they start doing anything, you will have to see a psychologist first and they will determine if you are in the right state of mind to have an operation like that done and to make sure that this is really what you want. Once you have the surgery there is no going back. The procedures are long and you have to continually keep going back and be on a whole list of medications.
Try drag for a while and see if it's something you enjoy and most importantly make sure you feel more comfortable that way then you do now. Everyone says you should be happy the way are but if you don't feel like your brain and your body go together, you will never be complete. Just make sure that what you do is what you want, that kind of surgery is not a quick fix for anything.

Why? Do you know how long it takes for a woman to get ready to go anywhere? Do you have any idea of the cost of makeup (and as a CD/TG you will need a ton of it). Do you know what it's like to wear high heels for a day? If your Dad told you that you would make a great doctor, would you be one? If your Mom told you that you'd make a great teacher, are you one? What your sister might have been saying is that you have domestic skills that most guys don't have. (Think about the hardee's ad:"Some guys would starve without us", it's not too far off) Try figuring out women's sizes (they are all different) and then make an appointment with a psych who specializes in Cross Dressing to see if you really are inclined towards this or just experiencing a mid-life crisis

I'll assume that 1) you are, biologically speaking, a boy and 2) you live in the US. If these two are true, you should simply be aware that even in a more socially liberal society such as that of the US, the fact that religious values play such an important if unfortunate role in people's lives means you will face discrimination which, depending what city you live in (Kansas City and Boston are very different), will be unquantifiable. Then again, if you, like me, lived in Brazil, the situation would be much, much worst.
In the end, we can't kid ourselves forever so, if you do feel you can take on this world's religious-based nonsense, go for it, really, there's no point in keeping something completely innocuous a secret.

Well, I think yes, if you start living as one you'll understand that being a girl isn't easy, and no people will judge you from what you are not what you have.

If you have to ask yourself "Should I?", then NO! it's like being asked if you are straight or gay. You will probably answer right away without thinking. You already know your gender, and your preferences. So, if you have to ask, then your answer is NO.
