All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

I'll explain this as simple as possible:
1) Set a restore point for your system every week or two.
2) Turn off scripting in internet options when not using known sites or buying things online.
3) Download Window's free spyware remover and scan your machine once every week or so with it. You can also leave this running.
4) Download HIJackThis and run it weekly and remove all uneeded things, or new things that appear in the window when you run it.
or
If you want a virus program always running, get mcafee and update it daily. If you don't update a virus scanner daily, any new viruses will slip by undetected.
I don't run a virus program because you have to pay to update them, and IMO it's not worth it. In the 5 years I've had this machine, I have gotten 3 viruses, and was able to manually get rid of 2 with those methods and RegEdit, but with one I had to restore to a previous working save point.
If you know little to nothing about viruses, I would suggest getting McAfee and updating it daily though.

I had problems with Norton, as it was bloatware and a tad too expenive for me at the time. I currently use AVG free antivirus software and it seems to be working well. Also, it found 3 problems that Norton did not.
A program that is worth your money is Spy Sweeper. Its only 20 dollars a year and is very good at finding malicious sites. Often times it is the only one that can find them. The problem with this software is that it will really slow down your computer upon startup.

personally i would renew your norton.
it will keep you protected for another year.
some would say try avast or avg free ones, but there detection and removal is lacking.
why settle for less when you have a better one?

Everyone has their preference.
If you want something at little to no cost try AVG
or the paying kind, MCAffee.
I personally do not care for Norton, but it is better than nothing at all!
