Of course, iTunes is the service that Apple is going to want you to use. I don't have an iPod, so I can't really speak to their draconian DRM issues.

There are other sources of content for iPods though. For example, My-Ipod-Downloads...

I'm sure there are others as well. And you're downloading standard MP3 files that reside on your Hard Drive with these services, so you're free to copy them and do with them as you wish. You avoid the DRM issues associated with iTunes.
