I had my amnio 2 weeks ago. I was given a local anasthesia and immediately after, the amnio was done. It was fast but quite uncomfortable. You are going to feel a lot of pressure that is all. Do not look at the needle and hold someone's hand real tight and you'll be fine. I am the world's biggest chicken and it went remarkably well. Afterwards, rest for 24 hours. Only get up to go to the bathroom, stay in bed. The minute you get out of bed, that eerie sharp pressure pain comes back. Rest so the sac can close and heal quickly. My doctor has been doing amnios for 19 years and I felt 100% safe, plus I did a lot of praying! It is such an amazing test to go through: 99.9% of problems are detected for a peaceful rest of the pregnancy and the risks of miscarriage is minimal. AFter 24 hours if there's no bleeding or fluid leakage, you are back to normal again.

Yes, it hurts, they stick a very long needle into your belly button into the sac and get a sample! Good Luck!
