I wonder which would be more beneficial and useful to have a changing table or dresser/chest in the nursery?

I would say a dresser chest!! I have a change table and honestly I haven't even changed my daughter once on there! We are always in the living room and I end up changing her on a change mat right on the floor. Especially when the baby gets bigger and starts to roll she/he isn't going to want to lay still while you go about your business..they will need something to keep them occupied such as the TV, toys, hanging onto something! I really wish I would've bought a dresser and hutch because I would've stored her clothes in the dresser instead of having a change table and dresser in her room and on the hutch to display pictures and her "firsts" like coin collections, etc..Good luck and I highly think the dresser/chest will be more beneficial!

I had a changing table with my first baby--it turned out to be nothing but a dust collector--never used after the first week.
With the second baby I got a long, waist high dresser at a thrift store for $12.00. I put a rail around the top to prevent any rolling off (It cost $10.00 for the rail and one afternoon to install it and stain and varinish it). I then made a pad for the top that matched all the other stuff in the nursery. That was the best investment of time I think I have ever done.
That baby is now 22 years old and still using the dresser (without the changing pad on it of course).

I bought a change table/dresser combo and I got very little use out of it. I wish I had spent the money on a better dresser (shallower drawers, better quality) I would get more sleepers, some babies are very cold and wear sleepers WITH onsies underneath for months even when it is warm. However family and friends are probably going to give you plenty. Socks aren't that great, please never let your baby sleep in socks. They are cute for short errands if baby's feet get cold but they can cause pressure points. I used to have the pictures up on my blog of what happened to my son from socks and I found a lot of other moms who went through the same thing. You can get a mattress for $40, so don't let that worry you too much. And I think after about $80 they become more or less the same. If you are formula feeding you need bottles, no clue how many. I don't bottle feed. Also I would get some more of the small change pads as some days you go through a few. The cloth with vinyl backing is nice because baby doesn't get cold. However the thick vinyl with no cloth can just be wiped and doesn't need to go through the wash very often Sheets and a mattress pad or two. But if you get thick flannel sheets you can ski the mattress pad.

Definitely a dresser/chest. Purchase a good changing pad for the top. Change table you have to get rid of eventually. A dresser/chest is part of their room for a very long time.

Dresser/chest.
The baby will grow out of the changing table fast & you can change a baby anywhere, but the dresser can be used for many years & you'll need somewhere to store the baby's things.

I used my babys dresser as a changing table. Just put the pad from a changing table on the dresser. This does not work well when baby is older tho.

I say the dresser/chest as a parent and a grandparent I have changed more baby's on the floor or on the bed it is not funny. I dont like changing tables once the child can roll as there are times they are very fussy and need to be changed and I dont like to worry about them falling off.

Dresser/chest for you can change the baby onm the bed, crib and any other place. The changing table just last for 4 to 5 months and its a waste of money

dresser/ chest I never used my changing table, the changing table is for people who have c-section and can't bend down to change the baby, or people with bad backs, it's seriously pointless. I have two children and I do live without a changing table and we are living fine without it.

I LOVE my changing table. A few friends tried to talk me out of one, saying the dresser would work just fine. Well, I don't know where I would have stored the MANY things needed for baby without it. Mine is totally open with two shelved below the changing area. I lined large baskets with fabric and they now hold all of the essentials--one for big diapers, one for little diapers (I have two babies) One for overnight diapers, one for packs of wipes, one for burp clothes, etc. It is so wonderful!

Also, I once saw on TV how to very easily turn a changing table into a potting table for plants and I plan on doing it!

Good luck with that litle bundle!!
