this theory is a common sense approach to second language acquisition.an over-simplified explanation would be that students learn a language easier if they talk about and listen to things that interest them. i use this approach in my conversation classes. rather then role playing 'going to the bank', or ordering in a restaurant' i try to direct the students to talk about anything they are enthusiastic about, or about themes they need to become more successful.

Self-monitoring is essential in learning a second language, especially if you want to develop the appropriate accent, grammar and usage.
Good ways to develop self-monitoring behavior are: #1 have students listen to the target language without needing to understand what is being said (just to get the idea of what it sounds like when fluent speakers converse). #2 have the students plug their ears while reading aloud. They will hear only themselves during this exercise and learn to self-correct.
