it depends.
ive been collecting gemstones for a little over a year now and some rubies are pretty pricey. Ive got some in my collection that ive paid well over $300 dollars for. But, then again, there are some you can buy for about $10 dollars a ruby. Check out jtv.com. This is where i order all of my gemstones i have in my collection. Usually, the reason some rubies are so expensive is either becuase they are really rare, or they will appraise to an extremely high value.

Spinel is another stone that people usally get confused with rubies, but spinel can be alittle cheaper in some cases.
Hope this helps!!

As one person already said, Rubies are MORE expensive than diamonds. A lot depends on the quality of the ruby or diamond that you're buying. Both rubies and diamonds come in vary different colors, cuts, and with different clarity. All of those factors and more go into determine the price of a stone that you want to buy. However when you have a ruby and diamond with equal qualities, the ruby will be much more expensive, because they are more rare.

Yes very expensive! But there are industrial grade Rubies often used in watch making. You have heard of a 17 jewel watch. They use industrial rubies as the bushings. The grade quality is what would make them more valuable. They are sometimes more than Diamonds. Rubies,Emeralds and Sapphires are all precious stones.

It's all relative. Gemstones like diamonds and rubies are investment pieces, as well as fashionable. Yes, rubies are more expensive than other gems, but they are worth their value. Sapphirres aren't so "cheap" either.

If you are looking for a actual gemstone (and not glass or plastic) to replicate the look of a ruby, look at garnets. They come in lots of shades, and are quite eye catching. I get compliments on mine all of the time. You can get garnets at a very good affordable price. You might try QVC.com. Their jewelry selection, pricing, and quality is great. Most of my jewels are from there.

they are expensive but not rare,,just like diamonds, they are mostly expensive because it is hard to cut and when they're cutting it the slightest mis-cut will shatter it also because they keep a control maximum number of rubies that can be on the market at one time so they are more expensive because they're rare only on the market
it also differs to the clarity, size, color, how skillfully cut it is and more.

hope helps
