been trying to fix it all day and nothing has worked?! also there are two light switches in the room but one of them has never worked... do we need to rewire or rearrange something?? =S thanks for any help or ideas!

you have an old home and the wiring is hardwired direct to the ceiling bulb.
the cheapest way to go is to pull the fuse on the sub panel for that room and remove the lite fixture.
just replace it with a new one unless you can see and rehook the string...they are only about 5 bucks,

additionally, the switches on the walls are usually connected to the receptacles on the lower part of the wall. plug a lamp in one until you find out which one is operated by the switch...then you will have an entry lite for the room b4 finding your string to pull

You can buy a new ceiling pull switch to replace the old one. But you may not need it if the light switches can be rewired. It sounds like you may need someone who knows more about this to help you..
