We recently inherited some goldfish from my grandfather and one of them, white with orange fins, is FAT. We thought it was going to have babies, but my mom informed us that it had been in that condition for quite a long time. We then realized that we've never seen this fish poo. He seems to be on the brink of death now, my mom is trying to save it (they are my little brother's fish now so we want to try and save them for him), she is trying to feed it mashed up peas and vegetable oil with a dropper. What is wrong with this fish and is there a way to save him at this point?

There's really not enough information here to know what's going on with your fat goldie. If his scales are sticking out like a pinecone, then he's in kidney failure (dropsy) and will most likely die. Gently lift his gill cover and take a look at his gills. they should be bright red and well defined. If they're pale, he's in organ failure.

Fresh foods (any non-starchy veggie) would be good.

Goldfish are prone to constipation. Peas, and anything green and leafy like spinach or lettuce are good for it. Goldfish can recover from constipation. Just feed him the dark green foods. Dont feed him any more canned fish food. And use the peas sparingly. Give him a couple of days, and Im sure he will be fine.

the previous poster hit the respond precisely. Feeding only dry ingredients is likely the situation. inclusive of your modern-day determination of fish i could propose you upload some frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp or comparable ingredients to their weight loss software besides because of the fact the occasional veggie. Feed them staple ingredients countless the time, yet slip in many the different food rather 2-thrice a week. as far as feeding is going, feed them as much as they are able to consume in 2-3 minutes in step with feeding. Feed that way once or twice an afternoon. in the past long you will get the texture for a fashion plenty it extremely is. MM

It is perfectly safe (and actually recommended) to feed your goldfish peas, especially when constipated. most pet stores feed their fish vegetables daily, since they prevent constipation.

to properly prepare peas for fish use frozen baby peas and allow them to thaw. soak them in water to get the air out (soaking them in warm water works well to get both things done at once). remove the shells and give two to your goldfish. you can also give your goldfish boiled leafy greens, vegetables, and fresh fruit. google fruit and vegetables suitable for goldfish and I'm sure you'll get plenty of answers.

hope that helps!

If it is constipated, peas are the best way to go. Just pinch em and squeeze the "pea guts" out for them to eat. The other option is small amounts of epsom salts.

Plain epsom salt (2 tablespoons per 10gal or 1 cup per 100gal of tank volume).
