I am a student, I am taking my PRE. PN (practical nurse)
my class had a discussion about epidural and tattoos.
You can/cannot have a epidural if you have a tattoo on you lower back.
If there is an area where there is no ink the doctor will give you one. but if your whole lower back is covered in a tattoo or is no space you can not have one. The reason being is that if a needle is pierced through the skin and manages to pass through ink, you could end up with ink blood poisoning.

I have an entire back piece. I have a wizard tattooed across my lower back, my husband watche the doctor do the epidural and the doctor even used the tatto as points of refrence. The next time I went to see a doctor, I needed a spinal tap. They asked me if I'd ever had an epidural, I said "yes, I have" and told them that the last doctor put the needle in right above the "crystal ball" from my tat. The doctor listened and tried and it worked.
Don't worry what your aunt said, maybe she doesn't understand all this kind of stuff, I don't know how old she is, but I do know that a lot of women have lower back tattoo's and they also get prego and need epidurals.
Good Luck, and don't sweat it! Your baby will be fine, ask your OB to let you talk with the anestesialogist, it shouldn't be a problem and it will put your mind at ease.

thats not true unless the tattoo is less than a year old. the epiderhal is going in deeper than what they put the tattoo on. The shot is going throuhg your skin and into your veins. its not gonna push any ink through that far to even get to your vein

that's bull, your aunt seems a little behind the times. the ink is in your skin, it won't go anywhere else. the only thing to be concerned about is getting a tattoo during pregnancy but it's already there so you have nothing to worry about.

Yes they can still do it. Many women have had tattoos there and then had children later on and still had an epidural. There are many uninformed people out there and your Aunt is one of them.

the ink in tattoos is long dry (hopefully) by the time you get your epidural, there is no risk of the ink going anywhere.

i heard that yesterday from a family member as well, not sure if its true. she said they can put it thru a gap in the tattoo. Who knows, I would ask your doctor for a definitive answer.

i have got one. never heard of it. they can do it around the tattoo. don't worry about it. lots of women have tattoo. If it would have been a problem you would have heard about it before from doctors.
Good luck
