Indeed; when different liquids are mixed, they can be separated by this process. Each liquid has its own boiling point. In fractional distillation, the temperature is brought to the temperature of the substance of the lowest boiling point, then distilled off. The temperature is raised and the process is repeated. Oil refineries use this process; called cracking, wherein a tall reaction chamber is used and the low boiling point substances are removed from the top and the lowest at the bottom. Hope this helps.

You need to be rather more specific when referring to 'compounds'. Are we talking about proteins, other polymers, small molecules, hydrocarbons etc.? As for distillation, it is the process of heating a mixture such that one or more of the components evaporates, travels through a condenser and condenses in another vessel. Fractional distillation is a type of distillation where the vapor is a mixture itself. In a high temperature environment the smallest molecules will rise to the top and the heavier remain near the bottom. The vapor is extracted at varying heights in the fractionating column. The resulting distillates will be more pure than if you had just used normal distillation but by no means absolutely pure. This is one of the processes by which petrol is obtained. I don't know what you're asking in the last two questions. Try adding some verbs in there.

It's to do with temperature, and at what rate the distillates come off. Commercially it's done in a tower.
Personally, its from drinkable at the top, to killing you and fuelling a car at the bottom.
