Being in the communications field for some time, I can tell you for sure that opportunities are there that you can't even imagine.

Let me start off by telling you that your experience level as a whole is low but, you are in the right place. Ultimately, you need to be thinking in terms of an IT director type position. Part of that direction requires some management experience that only comes with management experience... Weird huh? lol!
Many of the people I work with, only have a A+ certification but know much more about the computer world (as many do today). In business, an in depth understanding of WAN/LAN is large and, although many network people are admitted experts they only have one piece of the puzzle. You will need to build beyond that mentality in order to expand in the business.

For example, when a network technician tells me that they have insured, or know they have redundancy my first question is whether it's electronic or physical or both? If they are aware of layer one (physical layer) they have a notch up on the competition. If they have any OSP knowledge they make themselves more valuable.
The reaction speaks volumes for the person! Also, today's environment puts IT and Telecommunications in the same boat. May not be good but it's reality. IT people have a hard time wondering where teleco starts and the network begins and the other way around. A solid IT professional will have a good grasp on the in and outs of telecom and network.
