Respect is not a basic human right. I do not respect terrorists or their supporters. They do not respect the fact I'm a strong-spoken, learned woman. Respect doesn't come with breath, one must earn it. Inherently, we respect some things but not others. IE, paedophiles aren't respected by society. Do you supposition that they should be by virtue of being human? Respect is a very personal thing and can not be mandated by law.
As for the poor not being respected, to whom are you adressing the lack of respect? Society in general, specific people, governments, etc? Also, if you deem them not being respected, one would need to know what you consider respectful or non-respectful behavior.

You earn respect, I find it very hard to respect all of those people out there who's only aim in life seems to be to make life as difficult and miserable as possible for everyone else. By the same token those people probably don't think I deserve their respect. I guess everyone has a different idea of what deserves respect.

No, respect is not a basic human right. Respect is something that you earn from people based on your actions. And in essence your actions are a refelction of your personal morals and values. If a person doesn't have good personal morals and values in place then their actions will reflect that and hence it will also affect whether or not people will respect you.

As much as it should be, it is not.
In our culture we feel it should be earned, even though the elderly are given respect (well, most of the time, unless your name is Tony Blair), in others the elderly are highly respected, but on a normal, everyday level respect is not given and is not a right, it's a priveledge.

its a matter of the individual person, respect is within a personality, respect for yourself and others,so of course people who do bad against others do not have respect for other people.
The question of human rights does`nt come into it,it`s a matter of choice

It might be a right. But who is going to enforce it? Besides, there is such a thing as free will. Your right to respect ends where my freedoms begin.

No it isn't. Respect should be earned, and not given as a right.

it doesn't matter if your rich or poor you have got to earn respect of your peers you can not expect it. you normally get this by treating others as you would like to be treated

don't know but each animal dosen't respect each other so you know.
I think some people are just cruel shitheads (not everyone though but some) and when they are rich they just don't seem to care as long as they have a great happy life
