1989 Geo Spectrum, 5 speed manual. Worked fine, replaced clutch and was test driving it and it got stuck in 5th. I got it home and disconnected the linkage from the tranny and the cables were free. Intelligent answers only please, stupid answers will be reported.

I just took the selector off the top of the tranny and used a pry bar on the part in the tranny and it popped right out of gear. I put the selector back on and all the gears worked except 5th again but when the selector is off it goes in and out of 5th with no problem.

It is possible that the end of the shifter that moves the sliders is worn and getting out of the notch in the shifter shaft. Next time you remove it look at the underside of the top and insure the shifter is in a gate.

it may have broken a synchronizer in the transmission that's about the only thing that will make one stick in gear other than the top part of the shifter where it goes in at could have locked on it causing this to happen,i have seen a few of those get hard to shift but never lock up like that, and i do this for a living,so,,all you can do is check it out ,and find the cause,,good luck i hope this help,s.

This vehicle may have a hydraulic clutch slave that regulates shifting. It probably needs to be replaced. Also check your brake fluid level. If it is low the "slave" will not operate properly and stick in gear.

My hubby, a mechanic, suggests that perhaps the selector may need replacing but may be easier to replace whole gearbox.
