Say, Hi how are you, It was nice running into you but I'm in a bit of a hurry, we really must catch up some other time. Say good-bye and leave. If you are at a party say, I was looking for, fill in a name of the host of the party, I have something I really must tell them and excuse yourself.

You smile, share light conversation such as "Oh hi, how you doing ~ ~ seems that your doing well ~ ~ well fun to run into you (it was not but you need a segway to move on), then state it was interesting running into you, but I'm going to run and tend to (you fill in the blank . . . errands, appointment etc.) then smile and say bye. If they keep pressing then politely interrupt them, smile yet bring more focused look to your face and say...good to see you but I'm going to run. If their going to be rude enough to try to keep you in their presence than you can be (nicely) rude in turn and interrupt them to make your statement then go on your way. If they don't like it...so what...you don't care for them anyway. There's a couple of phrases . . . "People are going to treat you only the way you let them treat you" and . . . "Teach people how to treat you". No need to be all out rude about it...it''s just looking out for you comfort zone and space.

One of the perks of being retired and divorced is that I don't have to make any pretense whatever about liking someone for the sake of a job or a wife. The people I don't like know I don't like them so there's not much danger of having to make conversation with them to begin with.

Just say that it was nice meeting them but you have to leave in a hurry cause you have an important matter to attend to. Dont make them think that you are avoiding them. Say it in a friendly tone. Keep smiling and just tell them you are really in a hurry by watching at your watch as well.

That should make them understand, you are really in a hurry.

It works for me.

If you look at the watch, they know you are really hurry.

One of several things:

You could say "You've got something...." and point to your teeth, indicating that they have something stuck in their teeth.

You could politely excuse yourself "It's good to see you! Sorry, I wish we had time to chat but I have to slip away and make a phone call".

You could simply say "Sorry but I was calculating my bills in my head and a need a moment alone. Can we chat later?"

You could tell then that you were meditating. Or you could introduce some sirt of controversial issue that they don't want to talk about.

If they just keep pushing and don't get it, you could ask them "You aren't very aware of other peoples' boundaries, are you?"

Just tell them your sorry that you'd like to chat but you're in a bit of a rush and need to get to the bank right away, or an appointment, or whatever, just make up somewhere you need to be and politely excuse yourself.

I don't make excuses because that would mean I'm avoiding letting them know that I don't like them. If I don't like them I have no problem letting them know. I don't say it directly because that would be too boring but rather the subtle implications by body gestures and eye contact work best. That way, when they take th hint, they don't bother wasting my time next time thy may run into me.
