You should leave it alone. They are protected.
I even got chewed out by an "expert" for moving one off the highway into the brush along side.
I'd dp it again though, I just can't believe that my moving it endangered it more than the wheels of the trucks racing by. But you are supposed to leave them alone.

If it was a wild tortoise in most of the southern US, it is protected by law. Just leave it where you found it, or put it back in the same place.
The native US tortoises make terrible pets because they need big spaces and like to dig 4' long burrows.

There are several Tortoise & Turtle Rescues: I'm not sure where you live. So do a search on "Tortoise & Turtle Rescues" in your area. It also depends on where you live, what the turtle would be doing right now in it's natural habitat. For instance, where I live, Tortoise are looking for a place to hibernate for the winter at this time.

Let it go where you found it, if that is a safe spot. You should never take animals away from their natural environments.
ETA: Determine what species of tortoise or turtle it is before you let it go. Many tortoises cannot swim, so be wary of putting it in or near water.

depends on where you live? In my country {england} you would never see a tortoise walking around so if that situation ever occured then you would diffinitily take it in or to a home. But if you usually have them around then, i would leeve it, its probly just walking round getting food, or getting back home e.t.c.

Take it to a lake or pond and drop it off. I have done that before for a snapping turtle.

Turn it it to the closest animal shelter and ask if they can help you find the owner. If it HAS no owner and you want a pet, then keep it.
