The seismograph is the instrument that picks up the waves, then it is put on a seismogram where the lines are shown (it is the paper we see in the movies). The richter scale is the measure of energy created, the other one (MSK) is the measure of destructiveness.

seismometer is the sensor i think
seismograph is where it is recorded.
used to be a pen on paper.
it's probably on computers now.
the richter scale or magnitude scale are scales
used to say how big the earthquake was.
ie how far the pen moved off of center..
